But what exactly is a marine safari, what animals can you encounter, and what should you expect from a day out on the water? Here's everything you need to know before joining an ocean adventure in La Ventana, Baja California Sur.

What Is a Marine Safari in La Ventana?

Unlike conventional boat tours with fixed routes and scheduled stops, a marine safari is wildlife-focused: no fixed itinerary, always on the lookout, and a detour is possible at any time! No two days are ever the same! Out exploring, looking for marine animals in their natural environment.

Located on the eastern coast of the Baja California peninsula, La Ventana is the gate to some of the most fascinating marine habitats. From coastal reefs to open ocean waters, this region supports an incredible diversity of wildlife. The unique physical features favor seasonal upwellings that feed a huge array of marine creatures.

The routes are adapted to sea conditions, wildlife activity, and the interests of each group. We explore, observe, and respond to what the ocean offers that day.

It's an experience built around curiosity, exploration, and appreciation for the natural world.

What Marine Wildlife Can You See in La Ventana?

The famous oceanographer Jacques Cousteau called the Gulf of California the Aquarium of the World, and he did so for a reason! The waters surrounding La Ventana offer opportunities to encounter a remarkable variety of wildlife.

Some of the animals you may encounter include:

• Mobula rays: One of the most spectacular marine encounters in Baja California. During their seasonal aggregations in spring, hundreds or even thousands of Mobula munkiana gather in the area. Their impressive aerial displays, as they leap and spin above the surface, are incredible, but snorkeling while hundreds of them swim in perfect coordination is truly an unforgettable sight!

• Dolphins: Bottlenose, common, pantropical spotted, or spinner dolphins are among the species frequently encountered in these waters. Watching them travel, feed, or play around the boat is always special. Dolphins always make us smile!

• Whales: Humpback whales visit the Gulf during the winter months. Other whale species like blue whales pass through the region, sperm whales, fin whales, Bryde´s whales…

• California sea lions: Often spotted around rocky islands and reefs, these curious and agile marine mammals are fascinating to observe, both above and below the water.

• Orcas: One of the most popular and desired sightings in recent years, they pass through the area on occasion. Different pods are known to use the region for feeding on different prey. Truly the Queens of the Sea.

• Sea turtles & other marine life: Depending on the location and conditions, you may also encounter sea turtles, rays, sharks, seabirds, and many other fascinating species. Local reefs always offer a beautiful sight of colorful fish.

Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, and every day brings different possibilities. That's part of the beauty of exploring a wild ocean.

What Does a Typical Marine Safari Look Like?

A marine safari in La Ventana is usually a full-day experience, lasting approximately 6–7 hours.

We generally head out early in the morning, around 7–8 am, when sea conditions are often more favorable. You'll meet your captain and guide, get comfortable on the boat, and receive a brief introduction to the day's expedition.

Once at sea, the adventure begins. We cross the waves, keeping an eye out for signs of marine wildlife. Our local captains' experience and knowledge of these waters are invaluable when searching for animals and understanding ocean conditions.

When we find any marine animals, we take time to observe their behavior and enjoy the encounter without disturbing them. Depending on the species, sea conditions, and applicable wildlife guidelines, there may also be opportunities to enter the water for a closer look.

We enjoy snacks and lunch onboard or at the beach, depending on different factors. After several hours exploring the ocean, we head back to La Ventana, with full hearts, photos, and new memories to take home.

No two safaris are alike, and sometimes the most memorable moments are the ones you never expected.

More Than Wildlife Watching: A Different Way to Explore the Gulf of California

At Salinas Adventures, we believe that experiencing marine wildlife should go hand in hand with understanding and respecting the ocean. Ethical wildlife encounters are at our core. We aim to contribute to marine conservation through citizen science, education, and raising awareness about the importance of protecting our oceans.

Our marine safaris combine the knowledge of experienced local captains with a biologist-led approach to wildlife observation. This allows us to share not only the excitement of encountering marine animals, but also insights into their behavior, ecology, and the ecosystems they inhabit.

We keep our groups small and adapt each expedition to the interests of our guests and the conditions at sea. Animals always come first: we are visitors at their home!

It's not just about seeing animals; it's about connecting with the marine environment and gaining a deeper appreciation for the incredible life beneath the surface.

When Is the Best Time to Go on a Marine Safari in La Ventana?
